Labelle was the Ultimate funk/gospel songbirds in an era of post Motown and there were a lot of great ladies who could sing. in the 'Bluebell' era they held their own in the 60s when Motown flourished. As a 70s funk player i played some labelle and loved their album 'Phoenix' especially 'Black Holes In The sky'. Nona Hendrix' songs , Patti's lead and their great backing vocals with Sarah made them them way out front. The earlier 'Moonshadows' offering foretold their affinity for instruments as that is what their voices are. All of their music meshed together in way even on the fast tunes that not too many other female groups accomplished. They still are beautiful and their influence is timeless and makes me proud about the early 70s black music.
