For Those In Love
The Dinah heard on these selections is at the top of her game, in wonderful form. Her surroundings are certainly conducive to positive results. She's got a top-notch octet behind her on these March 1955 recordings. The wonderful Ellingtonian Clark Terry handles the trumpet chores. Jimmy Cleveland was one of the best jazz baritone trombonists of the Fifties, a splendid technician. Paul Quinichette, though too derivative of Lester Young to be called a great musician, sure plays Lester's ideas convincingly, and he can be heard to very good advantage here. soloing as tastefully and lyrically as ever. Cecil Payne, one of the first and best modern-jazz baritone saxophonists, takes an inspired solo on "This Can't Be Love", featuring some fine double-timing. Even when playing fast, Payne's tone remains attractively soft and warm.
