Bing Crosby simply had to happen. The coming of the microphone in the 1920's, and with it the wonder of electric recording; the emergence of jazz as a serious force in American popular music; the universality of radio as a medium for communication and entertainment - all called for a new kind of singer, and Harry Lillis Crosby suited the profile exactly.
